Social Media Keeps Us Connected To The Outside World

Social Media Matters (SMM) conducted its second workshop on September 24 with Bharti College for Safety September, a combined initiative of YOLO and SMM. The session was moderated by Arnika Singh, Programme Manager at SMM and Vikram Singh, Web Manager at SMM.

Social Media Keeps Us Connected To The Outside World

It was an all girls batch as we conducted our workshop on online safety. The workshop was conducted by Arnika and Vikram. The topics of discussions were Social Media Communications and financial e – transactions. We emphasized on the need for safety measures while making financial transactions online. The protocols that need to be kept in mind and how to have control over our data. The safety settings in Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were also discussed. Most of the girls were active on social media, especially Instagram. The reasons they cited for using Instagram was to broaden their network and to remain connected with people. They also admitted their linking towards celebrities, sportspersons and influencers whom they follow on social media. Social media keeps people connected to the outside world.

Students also had particular queries regarding safety settings. For instance, if you want to login when the previous device you had used for the same isn’t available. Vikram told them you can check on Facebook and Instagram settings regarding which devices you’ve been logged in with and the procedure for logout. There was one more query about data control related to the role of devices on the rising breach of data. Team SMM suggested that whenever we make an account on social media there are certain terms and conditions which users blindly check in through. Sometimes to register with a shopping site we give our Facebook access. Such time saving habits often lead to unauthorized data transfer. It’s advisable to separately login while creating an account and never use your social media access. By sharing social media access is inviting a third party to enter your social media profile.
