Why Bullying – A Mental Health Concern

When we talk about safety in the digital spaces we are also talking about the health issues it tags along. Today, not only physical health is of utmost importance but mental health has become of equal importance. In the recent report by the UN on the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, the highlight was that it included the importance of anti-bullying work in schools and promotion of respectful relationships.

With time, the social implications of digital forms like trolling, bullying and harassment has taken to a great extent that individuals are now negating on their health status which is causing an immense effect on their mental status. This has definitely become the crucial and significant topics to be addressed and discussed. Not only older generations are being affected but cases of bullying is hampering young adults the most.

Bullying be in the online space or offline in schools, communities or any other similar setting, children are deeply endured and victimized of it. This calls for a serious attention and solutions to curb the menace for a healthy and peaceful wellbeing. First and the foremost, there is a need of a mandate which is to be applicable for all students in the school and a student support center where the child can have a peaceful conversation with the experts. Also, hands on teaching for parents, teachers and members of the society to teach the children the positive and respectful narratives of discussion both in online and offline mediums.

One of the suggestions highlighted by the Special Rapporteur in the report emphasized upon mental health and wellbeing of individuals at work, home, in schools or in the communities. The sub point (e) stated in the 96 point addresses the issue of ‘Bullying’ with regards to non-violent and health relationships, stating;

'Address bullying with an ecological, public health approach that values and fosters non-violent relationships and engages children, schools, families and communities to end this harmful practice'
