For many children today, Artificial Intelligence is woven into their early experiences of curiosity, stories, and even gender norms. Early childhood development is no longer happening only in homes, schools, and playgrounds, but also through smart speakers, apps, and interactive toys.

AI is now present in children’s lives in quiet but powerful ways. It shows up as talking storybooks, “smart” toys that respond to their voice, voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home, and educational apps that read aloud, adapt to their responses, and personalise what they see next. The big question is: how deeply does this influence go, and is it always a good thing?

AI in the playroom: The New Normal

Developmental scientists like Dr Ying Xu point out that AI in children’s play spaces is becoming the new normal. Many kids now grow up with smart devices around them before they can spell the word “robot.” AI-powered tools are slowly entering classrooms and homes in the form of learning apps, storytelling companions, and speech or reading support tools.

When designed thoughtfully, AI can support children’s learning. It can offer personalised prompts, adjust to their pace, and give them extra practice on skills they are still building. In stories, AI can model different emotional expressions through tone and language, giving children chances to hear, see, and talk about feelings. The goal is not to replace parents, teachers, or caregivers, but to complement them by opening up new ways to practice language, thinking, and self-expression.

Language, Curiosity, and the “Easy Answer” Trap

One of the first changes we can see is in language development. Children are surrounded by AI tools that can answer questions, read books, and play interactive stories on demand. A child can say “Hey Alexa” or tap an icon and instantly hear a new word, a definition, or an example. AI story apps can pause, repeat tricky words, and even ask the child simple questions about the story.

This can be a real opportunity. Children can be encouraged to ask more questions, hear richer vocabulary, and practice back-and-forth conversation. Over time, this supports comprehension, attention, and memory. But there is also a risk. If AI always gives quick answers, children may start relying on it for every small difficulty instead of trying to figure things out on their own. As Dr Xu and others suggest, children need a bit of “productive struggle” to grow. When an app solves every puzzle or finishes every sentence for them, they may miss chances to build problem-solving skills and patience.

Can AI be a “Friend”?

Social and emotional learning is one of the most complex areas that AI touches. Many children, especially as they get slightly older, start interacting with AI for help with homework or even as a sort of companion. For some, talking to a chatbot or voice assistant feels safe because it does not judge, laugh, or gossip. That can give them space to ask awkward questions, practice expressing themselves, or explore feelings they are unsure about.

This can support cognitive growth and help them put words to their thoughts. But there is a limit. AI “understands” emotions through patterns and algorithms, not through lived experience, empathy, or care. It can mimic concern or excitement, but it does not actually feel with the child. Children still need warmth, eye contact, and the subtle cues of human interaction. The way a caregiver’s voice softens, the way a teacher leans in to listen, or the way a friend shares a giggle are all parts of emotional development that AI cannot genuinely reproduce. Over time, children can learn to tell the difference between a scripted “How are you feeling today?” from a device and a real, varied, human conversation.

What makes an AI tool “child-friendly”?

A child-friendly AI tool is about much more than bright colours or a cute voice. It needs to be age appropriate in both content and design. That means the tool should match what children at a particular age can understand, manage, and handle emotionally. It also means respecting their privacy and data, not collecting more information than necessary, and being transparent about what is being stored and why.

Organisations like UNICEF have emphasised that AI for children should protect their rights, follow child development principles, and support human relationships rather than replacing them. Some global initiatives call for including children, parents, and caregivers in the design process, so that tools reflect real needs and concerns. Ideally, AI for young children should be built to encourage conversation with caregivers, not to pull children into solitary screen time.

Education, Teachers, and AI

Children are often described as wet clay, ready to be shaped. In many homes, AI is already doing part of that shaping before teachers even enter the picture. But the impact is far more positive when adults actively guide how AI is used rather than leaving children alone with it.

If schools and educators introduce AI in thoughtful ways, they can help children see it as a tool, not a teacher that is “always right.” Teachers can explain that AI sometimes makes mistakes, that it does not know everything, and that children should still use their own thinking and classroom knowledge. Simple questions like “Do you think Alexa was right?” or “Why do you think the robot answered that way?” can help children develop early digital literacy and critical thinking. Instead of being passive consumers of whatever a device says, they become active questioners in their tech world.

Looking Ahead: Keeping Humans at the Centre

Even as AI becomes more present in children’s lives, nothing can replace the magic of human connection. A hug after a hard day, a shared laugh over a funny picture book, or a parent acting out voices while reading a bedtime story provide layers of emotional security that no app can truly match.

Frameworks like the B.R.I.L.L.I.A.N.T. approach (Balance, Respect, Interaction, Learning, Literacy, Inclusion, Access, Nudges, Transparency) offer one way to think about using technology with intention. In simple terms, they remind us to balance tech with offline life, respect children’s rights, encourage human interaction, and be honest about how tools work. AI can be a powerful ally in helping children become curious, thoughtful, and emotionally aware. But that will only happen if adults stay actively involved, set boundaries, and keep human relationships at the heart of early childhood. In a world full of smart machines, the goal is not to keep children away from AI, but to walk beside them as they explore it. When we do that, we can use AI to support their growth, while never losing sight of the power of human connection.
