In April 2020, amid the chaos of the COVID-19 lockdown, Social & Media Matters launched My Pincode—a hyperlocal, community-driven initiative designed to support people across India with real-time, verified information during a moment of crisis.
The project created district-specific Facebook groups across over 170 COVID-19 hotspots in 17 states, offering vital updates on medical needs, grocery availability, blood donations, curfews, clinic hours, and more. Each group was monitored by trained volunteers and moderators who verified every post to prevent misinformation and ensure public safety.
What began as a rapid response mechanism quickly evolved into a trusted emergency support system. In one case, a West Delhi resident found a life-saving blood donor within hours. In another, a request for help in South Delhi received a response in under two hours. These were not isolated wins—they reflected the strength and speed of a digital network powered by collective action and verified information.
Beyond critical aid, My Pincode offered practical daily guidance—from testing center updates to curfew pass info, and even queue lengths at essential services—making it an all-in-one resource during a time of uncertainty.
More than a tool for crisis response, My Pincode built digital solidarity. It showed how online communities, when rooted in trust, moderation, and accessibility, can transform into public service platforms. It stands today as a model for how hyperlocal digital networks can foster resilience, civic engagement, and inclusive support—both during emergencies and in everyday life.
